Dear Applicant:

 

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA. Detailed information about our graduate program and research is available on the web at www.physics.ucla.edu. The degree programs for Physics and for Astronomy are separate; please clearly indicate your choice of physics or astronomy on the application. The application deadline is December 15, 2009.

           

We accept new students in the Fall Quarter only. The department will not process applications for Winter or Spring quarters. Please note that our programs are for students seeking the Ph.D. We do not have a terminal M.S. degree program.

 

Please take time to thoroughly read the application material and instructions. Submit the application along with the application fee of $70 ($90 for non-U.S. citizens) online. (DO NOT SEND FEE PAYMENT TO THE DEPARTMENT!) Note: the application fee is necessary to process your application; it cannot be waived or deferred.

Send the following materials directly to the department by December 15, 2009. (We will not evaluate a file until all of the materials listed below are received and online application submitted).

 

·       Applicant questionnaire available here.

·       General and Advanced Physics GRE exam scores - both are required AND should be taken by October, but no later than December (UCLA INSTITUTION CODE: 4837 / PHYSICS DEPT CODE: 0808/ASTR: 0801)

·       TOEFL or IELTS required of Int’l students. Send TOEFL scores to major department; IELTS scores to major dept. & Graduate Division. (Minimum score on TOEFL CBT: 230/Paper: 570 /iBT: 88. IELTS min score: 7.0)

·       Part B (Supplementary Info: Supplemental Forms & Materials)

·       Part C (Statement of Purpose: Supplemental Forms & Materials )

·       Part D (3 Letters of Recommendation: Supplemental Forms & Materials)

·       Domestic Applicants – We encourage you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some or our fellowships are need-based, completing the FAFSA will assist us in determining your eligibility. UCLA Code 001315 http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

·       International Applicants – Confidential Financial Statement

 

Our first offers, which include fellowships, scholarships and teaching assistantships, are made in March and no later than April 1. Various types of other financial support are available. Please see the "Financial Support" section from our department website.

 

If you are an advanced (2 or more years) graduate student, be sure to include in your Statement of Purpose why you wish to change institutions. If you have been out of school for more than one year, please explain what you did during that time and why you want to return to school.
